Paravur (Kerala): 102 people were
killed and over 300 people were injured at a massive fire outbreak at Paravur
Temple in the Kollam district of Kerala. The fire outbroke in the wee hours at
around 3.30 in the morning.
Death toll is expected to shoot
up as many among the injured are in critical condition. The government has served
special orders to the hospitals in and around Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram
where all the injured are being taken into.
Kerala CM Shri Oommen Chandy has
cancelled all of his today’s scheduled programmes and has rushed to the spot. Home
minister Ramesh Chennithala also reached the spot and have inspected the site.
According to the locals, the explosion
was so huge that its effect was felt over 1.5 km circle. Temple building was
totally damaged. A number of buildings in and around the Paravur Temple
including houses and shops are also damaged in the incident.
The authorities said that there
was a serious violation of law which was stated the prime reason for the disastrous
accident, stating that there was no permission for fireworks and that the huge
collection of fireworks was done without gaining proper approvals. Home
minister Ramesh Chennithala has ordered a special investigation.
Meanwhile Prime Minister Narendra
Modi has tweeted that he would make a visit to the site today. He further has
announced compensation of Rs.2 lakh for each deceased and Rs. 50,000 for each
injured.
Fire broke out as a result of a
huge cracker (amittu) falling into the storehouse where the crackers were piled
illegally.
The incident remains the greatest
tragedy of the kind. Previous record was one which caused 68 life at Sabarimala
in a similar incident.
